Healthy Desk Habits: Stretches, Posture And Stress-Busting Techniques For Office Workers

Healthy desk habits for office workers

Think about a typical day at your desk. You start off feeling focused but as the hours tick by your posture slips, the screen feels a bit too close and your shoulders start to tighten. By the time the afternoon rolls around, it’s not unusual to feel drained, achy or even distracted by discomfort.

It’s something we hear often at Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic from people who spend most of their week in an office or working from home.

The truth is, our bodies aren’t designed to sit still for so long. But it’s not all doom and gloom – there are plenty of simple ways to take the pressure off.

In this blog, we’ll walk through practical tips you can weave into your day – from setting up your workstation properly, to stretches you can do without leaving your chair, ways to make the most of a standing desk and even stress-busting techniques you can try between meetings.

Get Your Desk Setup Right

A lot of the discomfort people feel at work isn’t about how long they sit – but how they sit. The way your chair, desk and screen are set up can either support your body or quietly work against it all day long.

Here are a few quick adjustments that can make a big difference:

  • Chair height – Your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at roughly a right angle.
  • Screen level – The top of your monitor should be at or just below eye level, so you’re not craning your neck.
  • Keyboard and mouse – Keep them close enough that your elbows stay tucked in and your wrists feel relaxed.
  • Back support – Sit back in your chair so your lower back has proper support, rather than perching on the edge.

Getting these basics right creates a stronger foundation so your body doesn’t have to fight against poor positioning all day.

Move More, Sit Less

Even with the best desk setup, staying in one position for too long can leave your body feeling stiff and sluggish. Our joints and muscles are designed to move, not to stay locked in place for hours at a time.

One of the simplest changes you can make is to break up long periods of sitting. Stand up every half an hour, even if it’s just to stretch, refill your glass of water or walk over to speak to a colleague instead of sending an email.

If you use a standing desk, try alternating between sitting and standing rather than being on your feet all day. Switching positions every 30–60 minutes can help to keep your body fresher.

Little changes like taking the stairs, walking during phone calls or stepping outside at lunch all add up. The aim isn’t to squeeze in a workout at your desk but to keep your body moving regularly so you avoid the build-up of tension.

Easy Desk & Chair-Based Exercises

You don’t need a gym mat or spare clothes to ease tension during the working day. A few simple stretches at your desk can help release tight muscles, improve circulation and give your mind a quick reset.

Try these easy movements next time you feel yourself seizing up:

  • Shoulder shrugs – Lift your shoulders toward your ears, hold for a few seconds, then release to let go of tension.
  •  Seated Side Stretch: Sit tall, raise one arm overhead, lean gently to the opposite side. Opens ribs and relieves tension in the sides of your torso.
  •  Forward Fold at Desk: Sit with feet flat, fold forward over your thighs, and let arms dangle. Releases the lower back and spine.
  • Ankle pumps – While seated, lift your heels and press your toes down, then reverse. It keeps blood flowing through your legs.

If you have a little more time at lunch, a standing stretch routine can do wonders for your posture and energy levels. We’ve put together some simple demonstrations you can follow – just take a look at our stretches and exercises page.

Stress-Busting Techniques At Your Desk

It’s not just your body that feels the strain of long days at work, your mind does too. Stress often creeps in quietly, showing up as clenched jaws, hunched shoulders or shallow breathing without you even realising it.

But you don’t need a full meditation session to reset. A few small pauses during the day can help you feel calmer and more focused:

  • Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing: Place a hand on your belly, inhale deeply so your stomach rises (not your chest), exhale slowly. Relieves tension and lowers heart rate.
  • Rest your eyes. Every so often, look away from your screen and focus on something across the room or out of the window. It gives your eyes a chance to relax and gently encourages you to sit back and reset your posture.
  • Palming: Rub palms together until warm, then cup them gently over closed eyes. Good for tired eyes.
  • Check in with yourself. Close your eyes for half a minute, rest your hands in your lap and notice how your body feels. It’s a simple way to let your shoulders drop and bring your attention back to the present.

None of these need to take more than a minute – but sprinkled through your day, they can stop stress from building up and leave you feeling more in control.

When To Seek Professional Help

Most of us will feel a bit stiff or tired after a busy day at the desk and that’s totally normal. But if pain keeps coming back, or you find it’s starting to affect your focus, sleep or enjoyment of everyday life, it could be a sign that something more is going on.

That’s where professional support can make a difference. At Lordswood Osteopathic Clinic, we often see office workers whose discomfort has quietly built up over months or even years.

With the right treatment and advice, it’s possible not only to ease the pain but to stop it from interfering quite so much with daily life.

If you’ve tried adjusting your desk or adding stretches and you’re still struggling, it might be time to book an appointment. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes – and hands – is what’s needed to get you back on track.

We always say – if discomfort keeps coming back, don’t ignore it. That’s often your body’s way of asking for a little extra support.
