Pain from tired, tight muscles or restricted joints can be so exhausting and debilitating especially if it affects your work, everyday life or hobbies. Sometimes this pain can be very severe and cause sharp shooting pains in the body and sometimes it can be more chronic, like a low-grade toothache, but whatever type it is, it can certainly get us down both emotionally and physically.
Medical acupuncture (also known as dry needling because it works differently to traditional acupuncture) is a very effective way of reducing pain and it, therefore, encourages the surrounding muscles to relax and allow more mobility in the joints. The relaxation of the muscles is a great way to remove stubborn and painful knots in the muscle – also known as myofascial trigger points.
How does it work? There are lots of theories behind the success of medical acupuncture/dry needling and the exact mechanism is not truly known. However, what has been shown in clinical trials is that the insertion of fine needles into a painful area or trigger point causes chemical and neurological responses from the body which in turn helps to reduce the pain and allow the muscle to relax. This is particularly useful if the problem has been long-standing and stubborn and other treatments have not helped it.
At the clinic, acupuncture can be used as a stand-alone treatment or as part of your osteopathic treatment and our experts will be happy to advise you on what we feel would be a suitable approach for you and your problem.
