Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common, painful condition affecting the foot which occurs when the plantar fascia - a thick band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes - becomes inflamed or strained. This inflammation can lead to a sharp pain in the heel or arch, particularly when taking the first steps in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
The plantar fascia supports the arch of the foot, absorbing shock and helping us move comfortably. However, when too much stress is placed on this tissue, it can lead to irritation, inflammation and pain.
Treatment of plantar fasciitis begins with a thorough assessment to understand the underlying causes in each patient. Often, the root cause may stem from issues in the knees, hips or even the lower back, so a whole-body approach is essential.
Osteopathic techniques such as articulation of the joints, soft tissue massage, stretching and myofascial release will be used to improve mobility and reduce inflammation and pain.
Recommended targeted exercises will be prescribed to help stretch and strengthen the plantar fascia, calf muscles and surrounding areas. Advice is also given on self-care tips which can help speed up the healing process and prevent reoccurrence.
