Take Care in the Garden This Autumn

As the leaves fall, the days get shorter and you prepare your garden for the winter, it is important to remember that whilst gardening is a great way to stay active, it can also take a toll on your body.  Autumn is the time for cutting back, racking and tidying up but don’t overdo it!

Many gardening activities involve repetitive movements and awkward postures that can put strain on your spine, joints and muscles.  Whether it’s lifting heavy bags of mulch, bending over to pull weeds, or raking leaves, it’s easy to push yourself too far without realising it.

Here are a few tips to protect your body while tending to your garden:

Use Proper Posture: When lifting, always bend from your knees and hips—not your waist. This helps protect your lower back and reduces the risk of injury. Hold heavy objects close to your body and avoid twisting your spine when turning to place items down.

Take Breaks and Stretch: Don’t push through discomfort. Take regular breaks, stretch your arms, legs and back and give yourself time to recover between tasks. Gardening doesn’t have to be a race!

Switch It Up: Repetitive motions like raking or digging can lead to overuse injuries. Try to change tasks every 20 minutes to give your muscles and joints a break.

Mind Your Knees: If you are working close to the ground, kneel on a cushioned mat to reduce pressure on your knees and avoid prolonged bending.

Listen to Your Body: If you start feeling stiff, sore or fatigued, it’s a signal to stop. Ignoring discomfort can lead to injuries.
